State of Early Literacy Webinar with Ed Trust-NY

We expect that children are learning to read in school with the most effective teaching methods, but is that always the case? The Education Trust - New York recently published a new report titled “The State of Early Literacy in New York” that asks this question. In partnership with the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County and other community organizations, the Ed Trust-NY will present their findings in a webinar on Sep. 27 at 2 p.m. over Zoom. The event is free and open to the public. RSVP here for the Zoom link.

The Education Trust - New York is a statewide educational policy and advocacy organization that is doing right by the children of New York. Their goal is to help children of all different backgrounds read at their grade level. Unfortunately, through their analysis, they found that less than 40% of students in grades 3-8 are proficient in reading. Through extensive research, surveys, and analysis, Ed Trust-NY has identified the growing issue and provides recommendations for putting an end to it.

One tool to avert this rising crisis is to increase awareness  about the Science of Reading. The Reading League defines the Science of Reading  as a “Vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing.” The Science of Reading is made up of five components which are A strong reader's foundation is made up of these five pillars: phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

To further awareness efforts, organizations, communities, and colleges are coming together to host a webinar about early literacy and its importance. Community members have the opportunity to hear directly from Ed Trust-NY Deputy Director Jeff Smink about the new report and its findings on Sep. 27 from 2 - 3 p.m. over Zoom.
