When it comes to costumes, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has three easy steps you can take to prioritize your child’s safety:
Stay away from costumes that could pose a fire hazard by selecting flame-retardant costumes that you buy or materials for your DIY costumes and opt for battery-lit candles and lights instead of any open candles;
Stand out and be seen by utilizing reflective strips along the costume and carry a flashlight, glowsticks, or other ways to illuminate your group as it gets darker during trick or treating;
Be sure that the costume doesn’t get in the way of your child’s activities by ensuring that the costume fits correctly and that hats, scarves, and masks provide good ventilation and visibility.
