Important Milestones at Six Months

Now that your child is at 6 months old, it’s important to keep track of these important milestones. These are things most children–75% or more–can do by a certain age. And they’re really important to keep track of.

By six months, most babies are hitting these milestones:

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL MILESTONES

  • Knows familiar people

  • Enjoys looking at themselves in the mirror

  • Laughs

LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATION MILESTONES

  • Takes turns making sounds with you

  • Stick tongue out and blows (makes “raspberries”)

  • Makes squealing noises

COGNITIVE MILESTONES (LEARNING, THINKING, PROBLEM-SOLVING)

  • To explore things, puts things in their mouth

  • Reaches and grabs a toy that they want

  • When they don’t want more food, they close their lips

MOVEMENT/PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT MILESTONES

  • Rolls from tummy to back

  • Straightens arms to push up from belly

  • Leans on hands to support themselves when sitting

Remember, you know your child best. Talk with your child’s doctor about any of your concerns and ask about developmental screening.
