Important Milestones at Four Months

Kicking off the new year, we’re taking a look at important milestones for your baby at four months old.  As a reminder, these developmental milestones are things most children–75% or more–can do by a certain age. And they’re really important to keep track of.

By four months, most babies are hitting these milestones:

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL MILESTONES

  • Smiles to get your attention

  • Chuckles (but not quite a full laugh) when you make them laugh

  • Looks at you, moves, or makes sounds to get or keep your attention

LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATION MILESTONES

  • Makes cooing sounds, like “oooo” and “aaaah”

  • Makes sounds back when you talk to the

  • Directs their head to your voice

COGNITIVE MILESTONES (LEARNING, THINKING, PROBLEM-SOLVING)

  • Opens mouth, when hungry, and sees breast or bottle

  • Looks at their hands with interest

MOVEMENT/PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT MILESTONES

  • Holds head steady without support when being held

  • Holds a toy when placed in their hand

  • Swings arm at toys

  • Brings hand to mouth

  • Pushes onto elbows/forearms when on their tummy

Remember, you know your child best. Talk with your child’s doctor about any of your concerns and ask about developmental screening.
