Early Literacy Game: Vocab Mix and Match

This week’s game offers a fun way for you and your child to work on building their vocabulary. All you need are index cards and a pencil to get this game going!

Vocab Mix and Match

Ability level: later reader

Directions: Take an index card. Begin by writing a vocabulary word on this card. On another card, ask your child to draw what that word means. If they’re too young, you can tell them what to draw to help out. Continue this with a handful of cards with words and corresponding drawings.

Next, shuffle the cards and arrange them in rows, face down.

When it’s your turn, flip two cards. If the word matches the drawing, then you get to take the cards for your pile. If they don’t match, then flip them back over, and allow the next player to go. The game goes on like this until all the cards are matched in each player’s pile. The player with the most cards wins!
