Dive into Summer with Splash & Bubbles!

School’s out. It’s getting hot out. And yet, summer is a time of learning. For little ones, summer is filled with teachable moments and opportunities to read aloud. For school-aged ones, summer can be a dangerous slide that erodes knowledge build over the school year. Or, summer can be a time to make gains in knowledge, stimulate imaginations, and build enthusiasm for learning by reading and reading out loud.

Syracuse Named an All-America City Award Finalist

The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading announced that Syracuse has been named one of 27 finalists nationwide for the 2017 All-America City Award for top honors in civic action, community problem solving and progress in advancing early literacy.  Syracuse has already been honored as a Pacesetter community by the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, which is awarding the All-American Award this year in conjunction with the National Civic League, which created the AAC Award 67 years ago.

"One of the most important academic milestones for our students is being proficient in reading by the end of 3rd grade and all of us in the Syracuse City School District are committed to seeing this happen for all of our students," said Syracuse School Superintendent Jaime Alicea.  "This would not be possible without the collaborative partnership we have with the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County and we are thrilled to be recognized for our work together as one of the finalists for the 2017 All-America City Awards," added Alicea.

‘Talking Is Teaching’ promotes early childhood literacy!

By Ashley M. Casey, Staff Writer, Eagle News

With babies, the conversation can be a bit one-sided. After all, they can’t talk yet. But according to a new campaign from the Early Childhood Alliance, parents should go ahead and chatter away to their little ones.

ECA has made Onondaga County the 12th community nationwide to join Too Small to Fail’s “Talking Is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing” initiative, which encourages parents to build their children’s language skills from birth. The campaign uses social media, billboards, bus stop signs and text messages to give parents tips on how to engage their babies through speech, song and books.

“Learning begins at birth,” said Laurie Black, ECA director. “The more we talk with children, the more we engage with children, the more prepared they are for school.” Learn more »
