Daniel Tiger Visit Breaks Mall Record!

We’re still smiling after over 1500+ attended The World’s Biggest Daniel Tiger Bedtime Story Read-Along at Destiny USA, the largest crowd EVER in their Canyon Area. In partnership with WCNY, we invited the public to a free event held on January 18th  based on the popular PBS Kids hit show “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.”

This was the kick-off of the Literacy Coalition’s Stories of the Seasons, a new format of themed literacy events for families that align with each of the four seasons throughout the year.  Guests enjoyed a story time led by actors from The Redhouse, cookies and milk, and a visit with Daniel Tiger! The first 500 children to attend the event received a free “Goodnight, Daniel Tiger” book and other free goodies. A huge thanks to all our generous sponsors and community volunteers, especially the leadership support of WCNY, NBT Bank, Wegmans, and Destiny USA. Learn more »

"We may take the habit of reading books to our children for granted, but not every family has started this important tradition," Virginia Carmody, executive director of the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County, said in a news release. "This type of event raises awareness about the importance of early literacy and helps to encourage families to read together every day, especially at bedtime."

WCNY also launched a new 24/7 TV channel for children, WiCkNeY KIDS, featuring educational programming from PBS KIDS. TV shows airing daily include "Arthur," "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood," "Odd Squad," "Sesame Street" and "Wild Kratts," encouraging kids' ability to learn and play.

"WCNY offers outstanding educational programs and now with our 24/7 WiCkNeY KIDS channel, parents and educators can count on these highly educational and entertaining shows anytime," Robert J. Daino, WCNY President & CEO, said. "PBS KIDS is the number one educational media brand, and WCNY is your community-owned, PBS station committed to preparing children for success in school and in life." Learn more »

Executive Director Marsha Tait and Sammy Award Winning Jazz Musician Ronnie Leigh talked to Bridge Street about how they are providing adults in the area with literacy tools and skills and how you can help them by participating in this tournament. Teams of 8-10 people compete in 20 minute heats for the highest Scrabble score; each round winner receiving an award along with a Grand Champion. Every round begins with a given word in a certain position to make sure teams don't come with boards memorized, making it not your average Scrabble game. Learn more »

Imagination is a key to learning and there's lots to keep children ages 0-7 busy in READytown, an interactive play space. Your littlest ones can spend time in the First Steps area, which features bright colors, board books, mirrors and even a tunnel to crawl through. The Play and Learn activity center provides parents, caregivers and children an opportunity to practice the five early literacy skills needed to prepare children for kindergarten. The themed activities focus on talking, singing, reading, writing and playing while engaging children.

Special events and performances are scheduled throughout the year so be sure to check out their website and events calendar at www.onlib.org. Learn more »
