Honorary Co-Chairs Named for 3rd Annual "Stories of the Season" Holiday Event!

While thousands of people pour into Clinton Square for the annual tree lighting ceremony, the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County will be holding its 3rd annual "Stories of the Season" event in the Clinton Exchange on Friday, November 27th.

We’re thrilled that our Honorary Co-Chairs this year will be Mr. James and Dr. Cynthia Bright. Jim is president of the landmark Dunk & Bright Furniture store, his wife is a pediatrician and also very much aware of the importance of reading to children starting at birth.

Join the Bright Family for a warm place to watch the tree lighting in Clinton Square! From the delicious food to the visit from Santa, to the live holiday music, to all the children's activities and of course, the stunning setting in the Clinton Exchange Building – we truly feel this event has become a lasting holiday tradition each year for families across Central New York.

Our Honorary Co-Chairs, Mr. James and Dr. Cynthia Bright, with their children (left to right): Joe, Carley, James, Erin.

Again this year we're excited to partner with local literacy programs, our Literacy Champions, who have the opportunity to raise awareness about their programs, sell tickets and keep their ticket proceeds! This list includes: Book Buddies, Child Care Solutions, Friends of the Central Library, InterFaith Works, LiteracyCNY, Lit’ for life, LCM/SU STEP Family Literacy Program, Redhouse Arts Center, the Newland Center, and WCNY’s Family Literacy Program.

Make your reservations today via Eventbrite.

Ticket price is $75 per person, $125 per couple and children under 15 are FREE! This includes: live music, open bar, a supervised children's activity area, Santa, carving stations, pasta bar, desserts, and a silent auction. If you have further questions or would like to purchase tickets over the phone, please contact: Kimberly Kemp at 315-214-2878.

We also plan to celebrate quite a milestone at this year’s event. Did you know that we're close to delivering 100,000+ of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library books in Syracuse! How many is that? Imagine a stack of children's books as tall as the Clinton Square holiday tree. Now, imagine 138 of those towering stacks of books...

THAT'S how many books the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County's Imagination Library has given Syracuse's littlest readers - setting them up for success in school and in life. Be there as one child gets book number one hundred thousand and ONE too. Join us and support our efforts to give the gift of literacy to everyone in our community!

A Life That Touches Others Goes on Forever...

In memory of Dr. Robert Laubach (1919-2015)

Pioneer in adult literacy education and New Readers Press founder, Dr. Robert S. Laubach (Dr. Bob) passed away peacefully on Friday, September 11 at the age of 96.

The small incidents in the life of Dr. Robert Laubach—"Dr. Bob"—are knotted together to present the life story of this prominent literacy advocate.

Kevin Morgan, president and CEO of ProLiteracy commented, "It is with great sadness that we announce today the passing of Dr. Bob – we will all miss him greatly. Dr. Bob devoted his life to adult literacy and will be remembered for his many contributions over the past 80 years. His legacy will live on in the weekly newspaper for adult learners, News for You, as well as the other adult education content he helped pioneer. Dr. Bob’s legacy of literacy will live on through the thousands of literacy organizations, tutors, trainers, volunteers, and students who continue to work toward his dream of a world where everyone can read and write.” Read more »
