ANOTHER SOLD-OUT SUCCESS!

We’re thrilled to share the news of another sold-out success of our Annual Stories of the Season. What a night! As we go about our day, moments return from the special night. We recall the laughter, the smiling children, the family togetherness, and of course... we remember the moment the tree lights were turned on. Everything changed. It felt like the holiday season had officially started.

We also celebrated the delivery of the 100,001st Imagination Library book to Caroline Hofmann, recently born at St. Joseph’s Hospital. To put that in perspective, imagine each light twinkling on the Clinton Square Christmas tree represented one book – you’d need four more glowing trees to reach that number. Envision the brightness – and power – of all those books! Read more »

We’re so very thrilled that our Honorary Co-Chairs this year were Mr. James and Dr. Cynthia Bright. Jim is president of the landmark Dunk & Bright Furniture store, his wife is a pediatrician and also very much aware of the importance of reading to children starting at birth.

According to Dr. Bright: “You see, opening a book and reading to a child isn’t just creating a beautiful memory. It’s building the foundation for success in school – and in life. As a pediatrician, I always talk with parents about the importance of reading to their children starting from birth. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics has called upon all pediatricians to become powerful advocates for early literacy development and its many benefits.” Read more »

All of our generous sponsors will be acknowledged throughout the month of December on our website at www.onliteracy.org. Our deepest gratitude to all those that helped us in writing this latest chapter in our holiday traditions and made our event possible.

Rotary Club of Syracuse Names 2015 Grant Awards

Carrying on Syracuse Rotary’s long tradition of service to the community, its most recent grantees include 19 local not for profit organizations, from a record breaking 31 applications, in support of this year’s theme “Helping to Improve our Diverse Community.” Grants range from $1000 to $7500 for a total giving of $37,500.

The Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County is very proud to be among this group and was awarded $2,500 to enhance our Imagination Library program, especially with respect to involving parents in their children’s early reading initiatives. In addition a special grant of $3,250 was awarded to the North Side Learning Center in memory of long time Syracuse Rotary member and literacy pioneer, Dr. Robert Laubach. This grant will be used to upgrade classroom technology supporting the Center’s variety of literacy initiatives for low income adults and youth. Read more »
